Na plaatjes en PDF blijkt nu ook Excel misbruikt te worden voor spam doeleinden. Er duiken duizenden spammails op met XLS attachments.

Het inrichten van datacentra is de laatste tijd aan verandering onderhevig. De belangrijkste reden hiervoor: de hoge kosten van energie en koeling.
Uiteraard verandert er niet zo heel veel aan de gebruikte spullen maar wel aan de manier waarop een datacenter ingericht wordt.
Een belangrijke manier die steeds meer ingezet wordt om het energieverbruik te drukken is consolidatie van machines middels virtualisatie.
Wat dit echter in de hand werkt is een hogere dichtheid van energieafname per rack. Zeker het gebruik van bladeservers zal hieraan bijdragen.
Het gevolg hiervan is is dat er zogenaamde hotspots ontstaan, plaatsen waar veel stroom wordt verbruikt en veel warmte wordt gegenereerd.
Met centraal geregelde koeling kan daar soms moeilijk mee om gegaan worden. Hierdoor wint lokale koeling steeds meer in populariteit.
Bedrijven zoals APC leveren speciale koelunits die in de rijen toegepast kunnen worden om deze lokale hotspots te lijf te gaan.

De IEEE heeft besloten dat er een speciale werkgroep komt die de specificaties gaat schrijven voor een 40 Gb/s Ethernet standaard. De groep gaat ook de specificaties opstellen voor een 100 Gb/s variant.
De 100 Gb/s standaard zal kabelspecificaties omvatten voor 40 of 100 kilometer over single mode fiber, 100 meter voor multimode fiber en 10 meter over koper.
De 40 Gb/s standaard wijkt echter iets af: 100 meter over multimode fiber, 10 meter over koper en 1 meter over een backplane.

VMware heeft een tool uitgebracht, genaamd VMark, waarmee de performance van verschillende types servers gemeten kan worden in een virtuele omgeving.
Een dergelijk benchmark tool bestond nog niet, tot nu toe werd alleen de performance van een enkele applicatie op een server gemeten.
Volgens VMware is hun tool, genaamd VMark, hierop het antwoord. Het tool biedt hardwareleveranciers de mogelijkheid te laten zien hoe goed hun hardware schaalt maar tegelijkertijd biedt het klanten een manier om in te schatten hoeveel hardware ze nodig hebben om de gewenste functionaliteit op te tuigen.

Er is een vrij serieus lek ontdekt in de populaire DNS server BIND. Het lek wordt nog niet misbruikt maar het lijkt zeer wel mogelijk er een cache poisoning hack voor te maken.
Uiteraard zijn er al updates verschenen, Het Internet Storm Center heeft volop links naar BIND online staan.

Dat de nieuwe 2,5 inch form factor populair begint te worden voor servergebruik was al bekend. De diverse schijffabrikanten brengen allemaal een voor een modellen uit die bedoeld zijn voor enterprise gebruik.
Nu meldt Fujitsu dat ze een aantal nieuwe series hebben:
- MHY2 BS - 5400 RPM, SATA interface
- MHY2 BK - hier ligt de spindle speed op 7200 RPM
- MHY2 AC - deze serie kan tegen extreem hoge en lage temperaturen
Behalve voor gebruik in servers vinden we dit soort schijven ook terug in POS-terminals, ziekenhuisapparatuur, PIN-automaten, etcetera.

Cisco heeft zichzelf een geheel nieuwe strategie aangemeten en verkondigt die nu breed. De plannen zijn nu om in de komende 18 tot 24 maanden een significant deel van de business te halen uit datacenters.
Cisco wil de nummer 1 positie verkrijgen als leverancier van datacenter bouwstenen. Kennelijk werd Cisco niet echt gezien als een datacenter bouwer maar dat moet nu veranderen.
Ook Cisco ziet virtualisatie als een goede mogelijkheid vorm te geven aan haar initiatief. Hiervoor heeft Cisco tooling utgebracht genaamd VFrame Data Center. Dit is een orkestratie tool waarmee het mogelijk wordt alle apparatuur in het datacenter als een grote pool te beschouwen en middels een virtuele services infrastructuur uit te delen.
Uietraard heeft Cisco partners gezocht en die omvatten o.a. EMC, VMware, HP en IBM.

System Center?? Ja, dat is de verzamelnaam voor programma's zoals SMS, MOM, e.d. Ook Softgrid komt nog ter sprake.

HP heeft opnieuw datacenter technologie uitgebracht, genaamd TZM. TZM staat voor Thermal Zone Mapping en het moet helpen om probleemgebieden in een datacenter op te sporen.
TZM geeft een driedimensionaal beeld van de plaatsen waar aircoolingsunits koele lucht blazen en ook hoeveel lucht ze dan blazen.
HP vergelijkt de koeling met airco's thuis. Die kunnen de hoeveelheid koele lucht varieren en HP wil die intelligentie ook in het datacenter brengen.
HP denkt dat klanten hun energiekosten in hun datacenter met 10 tot 4% kunnen verlagen.

De bekende Deense security site Secinia heeft een tool uitgebracht waarmee je gewaarschuwd kunt worden als er applicaties ge-update moeten worden.
Het tool is gratis, voor thuisgebruikers, maar op dit moment is het tool nog in beta.

McAfee zal naar verwachting vandaag een gratis rootkit detectietool uitbrengen. Het tool, Rootkit Detective, bestond al een tijdje maar was in beta.
McAfee gaat zover dat geclaimd wordt dat alle bestaande rootkits gevonden worden maar zou McAfee ook moeten helpen nieuwe varianten op te sporen.

Microsoft heeft op haar website een link geplaatst naar Office 2003 SP3 administrative templates en andere info. Dit kan niet anders betekenen dan dat SP3 voor Office 2003 eraan zit te komen.

Microsoft's SysInternals heeft het bekende tool Process Monitor van een update voorzien. Het gaat nu als versie 1.2 door het leven.

Op hun blog schrijft het Microsoft Exchange team over de nieuwe Microsoft certificeringen en Exchange 2007.
The new generation of certifications is actually good news for Exchange administrators. In earlier versions of Exchange you passed a single administration or design exam to achieve the Microsoft Certified Professional credential. However, passing both the administration and design exams did not qualify you for a higher certification level unless you also happened to achieve MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) and/or MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) status. Even then, the Exchange messaging certifications were tacked on as a qualifier to MCSA/MCSE to indicate your area of specialization. Both the MCSA and the MCSE are centered on Windows and Active Directory administration and design. To obtain that MCSE: Messaging certification and let the world know that you are a highly-qualified messaging administrator you actually had to pass eight separate exams.
With the new generation of certifications, there are two levels of Exchange certification: Technology Specialist and IT Professional. Granted, this makes for some really long certification names, but they clearly identify your area of expertise. There are three exams in the Exchange Server 2007 certification track.

Het was al bekend dat McAfee een gratis tool voor het vinden en verwijderen van rootkits openbaar zou maken. Dat is nu inderdaad gebeurd.
Het tool is hier te vinden.
McAfee meldt dat er sinds het begin van het jaar al ongeveer zo'n 7300 rootkit-varianten gevonden zijn. Een duidelijk groeiend probleem.

Cisco geeft toe dat ze op ramkoers liggen met Microsoft en dat ze, vooral onder druk van de klanten, die aankomende botsing het liefst zouden voorkomen.
De bedoeling is dat gekeken wordt naar een strategie waarin geconcurreerd en gepartnerd kan worden. Of dat gaat lukken is dus nu de vraag.

Deze vraag wordt besproken door Jim Klein. Al doende komt hij echter tot de conclusie dat het wellicht niet de juiste vraag is. het is in zijn ogen zinloos om het over featuresets of beheertools. De vragen "welke richting gaat virtualisatie op?" en "welke technologie biedt op de lange termijn het beste?" zijn in zijn ogen veel belangrijkere vragen.
