Public Folders are one of the most useful features of Exchange Server. However, it’s possible that there are situations in which a folder’s visibility makes it desirable to have some extra layer of control, one final check, if you like, before something actually appears in full public view. This is where Moderated Folders come in. In this article, I will describe how you create and use a moderated folder in Exchange Server.

  • The Live Communications Server service stops responding on a Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1-based computer - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=911268
This problem occurs because the real-time communications (RTC) service occasionally causes a deadlock in the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service. A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix.

This problem occurs after the Outlook 2003 post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package that is dated November 16, 2005 is applied. This issue is fixed in the Outlook 2003 post-Service Pack 2 Hotfix Package that is dated January 23, 2006. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix.

In this article I will show you how to change the banner for the POP3/IMAP4 and SMTP service in Exchange 2003. Changing the banner for these Exchange services enhances the security if an attacker and illegitimate users don't know, on the first try, which server is communicating with them. Please keep in mind that this is only one of several methods of securing the Exchange environment.

  • Microsoft Exchange Server Profile Analyzer - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8f575f60-bd80-44aa-858b-a1f721108fad&DisplayLang=en

    Overview

Use the Microsoft Exchange Server Profile Analyzer tool to collect estimated statistical information from a single mailbox store or across an Exchange Server organization. The collected data can be used for such tasks as analyzing the performance and health of a server that has mailboxes, improving capacity planning models, and improving testing methodologies and tools.

Prior to upgrading to this version, users should backup the default Profile Analyzer configuration XML file if any customizations have been made.

Important Notice: The Microsoft Exchange Profile Analyzer tool collects information related to user activity on production mailbox systems and can be used to generate aggregate user profile statistics for sets of Exchange users. Before using the tool in a production environment, you may wish to ensure that your collection and use of this information is consistent with the privacy and other laws of your country.
  • Microsoft Exchange Server Public Folder DAV-based Administration Tool - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=635be792-d8ad-49e3-ada4-e2422c0ab424&DisplayLang=en

    Overview

Use the Exchange Server Public Folder Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV)-based Administration tool (PFDAVAdmin) to perform various management tasks related to public folders and mailboxes. The tool checks the permissions status of each public and mailbox folder and corrects any problems found. The ability to bulk export/import the permissions and replica lists make this tool invaluable in achieving greater productivity in managing public folders. The program can also reports content information of each public folder and mailbox folder such as the number of items in each folder, size of folder and most recent modification date of any item in the folder.
  • Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync Certificate-Based Authentication Tool - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=82510e18-7965-4883-a8c3-f73f1f4733ac&DisplayLang=en

    Overview

The Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync Certificate-Based authentication tool provides several utilities to assist an Exchange administrator in configuring and validating client certificate authentication for Exchange Server ActiveSync. These utilities include:
    · A tool to assist the administrator in configuring certificate enrollment for mobile devices connecting to Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2. Specifically, the tool will help the administrator populate the Active Directory with the following information to be used by the mobile device when enrolling for a certificate:
o Certification authority (CA) server name
o Certificate template that will be used
o Other settings, such as custom Web enrollment URLs

Because the tool writes information to the Active Directory, it must be run by someone with domain administrator privileges.

    · Additional tools to validate that a mobile device can successfully retrieve the above configuration information from the Active Directory.

    · Documentation outlining the server configuration steps necessary to enable & require certificate-based authentication for Exchange Server ActiveSync.
  • Microsoft Exchange Server Jetstress Tool - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=94b9810b-670e-433a-b5ef-b47054595e9c&DisplayLang=en

    Overview

Use Jetstress to verify the performance and stability of a disk subsystem prior to putting an Exchange server into production. Jetstress helps verify disk performance by simulating Exchange disk Input/Output (I/O) load. Specifically, Jetstress simulates the Exchange database and log file loads produced by a specific number of users. You use Performance Monitor, Event Viewer, and ESEUTIL in conjunction with Jetstress to verify that your disk subsystem meets or exceeds the performance criteria you establish. After a successful completion of the Jetstress Disk Performance and Stress Tests in a non-production environment, you will have ensured that your Exchange 2003 disk subsystem is adequately sized (in terms of performance criteria you establish) for the user count and user profiles you have established. It is highly recommended that the Jetstress user read through the tool documentation before using the tool.

Note Jetstress is only supported when running with Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 or newer versions of ESE.DLL. Also, due to this support limitation, Jetstress is only supported on Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, Advanced Server, Datacenter and newer Windows OS platforms (Windows NT 4.0 and older builds are not supported).
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Load Simulator (LoadSim) - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=92eb2edc-3433-47ca-a5f8-0483c7ddea85&DisplayLang=en

    Overview

Use Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Load Simulator (LoadSim) as a benchmarking tool to simulate the performance load of MAPI clients. LoadSim allows you to test how a server running Exchange 2003 responds to e-mail loads. To simulate the delivery of these messaging requests, you run LoadSim tests on client computers. These tests send multiple messaging requests to the Exchange server, thereby causing a mail load. LoadSim is a useful tool for administrators who are sizing servers and validating a deployment plan. Specifically, LoadSim helps you determine if each of your servers can handle the load to which they are intended to carry. Another use for LoadSim is to help validate the overall solution.

Important LoadSim should be used only in laboratories that have no connection to the production environment. This tool should not be used in any way in a production environment or an environment that is mission critical or contains important information of any kind anywhere in the network.
