Er is een nieuwe versie uit van de Exchange Best Practices Analyzer, namelijk versie 2.8.
Overview
The Exchange Best Practices Analyzer programmatically collects settings and values from data repositories such as Active Directory, registry, metabase and performance monitor. Once collected, a set of comprehensive ‘best practice’ rules are applied to the topology.
Administrators running this tool will get a detailed report listing the recommendations that can be made to the environment to achieve greater performance, scalability and uptime.

Binnen de Higher Speed Study Group binnen de IEEE is onenigheid ontstaan over de roadmap naar 100 G Ethernet. Een aantal leden wil dat er eerst een 40 G tussenstandaard komt waarvoor zij denken dat er een flinke markt zal zijn. Andere leden vinden dat pure tijdsverspilling. Men verwacht een beslissing in de vergadering die volgende maand gehouden wordt. Komt er geen overeenstemming, dan kan de IEEE de groep mogelijk opheffen.

Overview
Deployment steps described in this white paper are based on the highly successful cluster deployment at National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. The cluster was built as a joint effort between NCSA and Microsoft, using commonly available hardware and Microsoft software. The cluster was composed of 450 x64 servers, achieving 4.1 teraflops (TFLOPs) on 896 processors using the widely accepted LINPACK benchmark.
The skill level that is required to complete the steps in this document assumes knowledge of how to install, configure, and manage Microsoft Windows Server 2003 in an Active Directory environment, and experience in adding and managing computers and users within a domain.

Microsoft heeft haar learning site vernieuwd. Dat maakt een Microsoft medewerker bekend op een technet blog.

De laatste tijd brengen de meeste fabrikanten op het vlak van enterprise schijven (SCSI, SAS en FC) alleen nog 15.000 toeren schijven uit. Seagate heeft echter besloten dat er nog ruimte in de markt is voor 10.000 rpm schijven. Voor de Cheetah NS houdt dan wel in dat de capaciteit kon groeien naar 400 GB. Wel heeft besloten wat minder modellen uit te brengen dus de toekomst voor dergelijk schijven wordt ingeschat als beperkt.
Met zijn techniek gebaseerd op de Cheetah 15k5 maar met perpendicular recording nam de performance met zo'n 10% toe terwijl er een besparing is van zo'n 33% op het gebied van energieverbruik en koeling.

HP heeft nieuwe tapeoplossingen en disk arrays uitgebracht die een behoorlijk lager energeiverbruik als voornaamste voordeel hebben.
De nieuwe EVA4100, 6100 en 8100 zijn gepositioneerd in de instap- midden en high-end segmenten.
Bahelve Fibre Channel disks biedt HP tegenwoordig ook de mogelijkheid van zogenaamde FATA-disks. Dit zijn ATA schijven met Fibre Channel koppeling.
Het arikel gaat nog verder in op de nieuwe mogelijkheden van de arrays, waaronder Dynamic Capacity Management.
Op het gebied van tapes blijft HP goed meedoen. Zo werd de energiezuinige Ultrium1840 LTO-4 drive geintroduceerd, de Ultrium 448c tape blade en een DAT-160.

Columnist Ryan Naraine wijst ons op het feit dat Microsoft stilletjes begint toe te geven dat er soms meer lekken worden gefixt in een security bulletin/hotfix dan ruiterlijk toegegeven wordt.
Hij vond hiervoor een aanwijzing in een Visio bulletin waarin wordt gesproken over het dichten van een tweetal lekken.
Deze praktijk is bedenkelijk hoewel wel begrijpelijk. Deze werkwijze beinvloedt de statistieken uiteraard.
Het gevaar zit overigens niet alleen in het beinvloeden van de statistieken maar vooral in het feit dat de 'bad guys' de gefixte lekken wel weten te vinden.
De malware schrijvers kijken namelijk welke veranderingen er in de patch zit. Op deze manier kunnen er exploits verschijnen voor de lekken die Microsoft stilletjes heeft gepatcht. Met name de andere partijen in de security wereld hebben hiervan te lijden. Ook security mensen in bedrijven hebben hier last van, die maken hun beoordelingen op basis van de bekende gegevens. Hierdoor zouden we theoretisch hun beslissingen verkeerd kunnen nemen omdat de inschatting verkeerd werd gedaan.

Er zou een adminpak komen voor Windows Vista. Dat bevestigt Microsoft nog steeds maar voorlopig is dat niet klaar. We zullen het dus moeten doen met Remote Administration via RDP.
