Tijdens TechEd 2007 komen er vrijwel constant interessante nieuwtjes vrij.

Duidelijk is dat Windows Server 2008 de laatste 32-bits versies van WIndows Server is. Een opsomming van de nieuwe kernel features:
Dynamic Partitioning - which allows hot adding of resources
Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA) - a new common error reporting infrastructure
Hypervisor - basis for Windows Server Virtualization
Time Accounting - better allocating of cpu ressources to processes
Self-healing NTFS - worker thread does background checks
SMB2 - 30x-40x more throughput
IO Completion Port - efficient IO completion
IO Prioritization - background processes can run with less priority

Het is duidelijk, virtualisatie wordt de 9e rol van de Windows-loze Windows Server Core.

Mary Jo Foley zwengelt de compatibiliteit van Windows Server 2008 aan. Heel verstandig. Uiteraard komt pas eind van het jaar uit maar het is nu al mogelijk na te denken over de issues die gaan ontstaan met allerlei software. Zo is bekend dat heel veel tooling, die rechtstreeks de kernel benadert, problemen zal ondervinden.

Tijdens TechEd heeft Microsoft tamelijk stilletjes verteld dat SP1 voor Exchange 2007 nog dit jaar zal uitkomen. Op dit moment is het Service Pack in beta.
Veranderingen zijn de GUI en een verbeterde management console voor Public Folders, IMAP en POP. Nieuw is ook de provisioning van certificaten, dat ontbrak tot nu toe.
Ook op het vlak van SendAs permissions zijn verbeteringen doorgevoerd.
Daarnaast krijgt OWA een overhaul, met name de ondersteuning van Office 2007 documenten wordt verbeterd maar er zijn ook andere verbeteringen.

Op NetworkWorld is een lijstje te vinden van 10 gratis tools op het vlak van virtualisatie. Volgens de auteur van het stuk is het de moeite van het bekijken zeker waard.
Opvallend is de TCO calculator waarmee berekend kan worden hoeveel de TCO zakt met het gebruik van virtualisatie.

Microsoft heeft weer een connector voor Outlook en WIndows Live Mail (het vroegere hotmail) uitgebracht. Het is nog in beta.

Microsoft heeft eindelijk een eenduidig standpunt ingenomen waar het virtualisatie betreft en dan vooral over 3rd party tools.
Hiervoor heeft Microsoft een white paper uitgebracht.
Finally Microsoft takes a clear and official position about application of Windows licensing on virtual machines hosted on 3rd party virtualization platforms (including hardware virtualization solutions like VMware ESX Server or VMware Server and OS virtualization solutions like SWsoft Virtuozzo).
In a brand new whitepaper Microsoft covers all these scenarios, including special features like VMware VMotion and client-side licensing terms.

Microsoft had bij Exchange 2007 de licenties veranderd. Dit had tot gevolg dat het beheer van mailboxen duurder zou worden.
Nu blijkt Microsoft opnieuw de voorwaarden aangepast te hebben waardoor de wijziging ongedaan is gemaakt.
"At the time of the Exchange Server 2007 release to manufacturing, access to Messaging Records Management (MRM) was licensed as part of the Exchange Enterprise CAL. To provide the closest possible functional equivalence to what was available in Exchange Server 2003, access to Managed Default Folders in Exchange Server 2007 is now licensed as part of the Exchange Standard CAL," Microsoft said in the licensing advisory issued in May. Microsoft, however, has not backed off its controversial Outlook 2007 e-mail client licensing provisions.

McAfee gaat binnenkort beginnen met de beta's voor GroupShield 7.0 (Exchange). Nog deze maand zou de beta van start moeten gaan.

Met de juni security bulletins heeft Microsoft zo'n 15 gaten gedicht. De malware wereld zit Microsoft echter dicht op de hielen want de eerste exploits zijn dan ook al verschenen.
Met name Internet Explorer moet snel gepatcht worden.

Symantec heeft haar vlaggeschip product op het gebied van backups, NetBackup, weer van een update voorzien. Versie 6.5 moet vorm geven aan de Storage United visie van Symantec.
De nieuwe software moet met elke vorm van backups overweg kunnen, dus zowel tape backups, disk backups, replicatie, Continuous Data Protection en snapshots.

Volgens Gartner is de enorme stroom aan consumentenapparaten de grootste bedreiging voor de beveiliging binnen bedrijven. Medewerkers verwachten ook steeds meer dat ze hun persoonlijke spullen kunnen en mogen gebruiken op het werk. Daarnaast schat Gartner in, dat ondanks het feit dat dit soort apparatuur voor grote risico's zorgt, het verbieden en uitschakelen steeds moeilijker wordt en onpraktisch.
Daarom vindt Gartner dat bedrijven zich moeten voorbereiden op een viertal gebieden waar consumentenproducten het netwerk binnendringen:
- Consumenten email en communicatiediensten
- Web 2.0 - blogs en sociale netwerksites
- Onbeheerde mobiele apparaten
- Beheer en monitoring van remote connectivity
