Techworld meldt dat een aantal lekken in BrightStor ArcServe gedicht zijn. We praten hier dan over versie 9.01 t/m 11.5.
Het blijkt mogelijk om via een buffer overflow lek remote software uit te voeren, hetgeen in de praktijk altijd betekent dat een hacker je systeem kan overnemen.
Daarnaast meldt het Amerikaanse US-CERT dat er al actief misbruik van het lek gezien is. Hoog tijd om systemen te patchen, lijkt me.

Overview
This ISO-9660 CD image file contains the security updates for Windows released on Windows Update on January 9th, 2007. It does not contain security updates for other Microsoft products. This CD image is intended for corporate administrators who manage large multinational organizations, who need to download multiple individual language versions of each security update and who do not use an automated solution such as WSUS. Use this image to download multiple updates in all languages at the same time.
Caution: Be sure to check the individual security bulletins at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security prior to deployment of these updates to ensure that the files have not been updated at a later date.

Overview
The Microsoft Password Change Notification Service enables synchronization of password changes in Active Directory to Microsoft Identity Integration Server Service Pack 1 (MIIS) or the Microsoft Enterprise Single Sign-On (ENTSSO) service. These components simplify password management in organizations with multiple user identity repositories.

Verschillende mensen hebben het al in de gaten, Outlook 2007 zal niet meer Internet Explorer als HTML rendering engine gebruiken maar.......MS Word.
Dit heeft volgens deze mensen grote gevolgen voor de compatibiliteit. De rendering engine engine van IE is heel goed, met versie zo mogelijk nog beter. MS Word is als rendering engine aanzienlijk slechter, men spreekt van een stap van 5 jaar terug in de tijd.
Mails zien er niet meer uit: achtergrond images die verkeerd worden weergegeven, slechte ondersteuning voor achtergrond kleuren, CSS-schema's die in de war worden geschopt.
Op de vraag waarom Microsoft besloten heeft de rendering engine te veranderen kreeg Mary Jo Foley geen antwoord.

De PCI SIG, de bewaker van de PCI standaarden, heeft versie 2.0 van de PCI Express standaard goedgekeurd. De nieuwe standaard is uiteraard backwards compatible met de huidige 1.1 versie.
Nieuw is voornamelijk de verhoging van de doorvoersnelheid, die van 2,5 naar 5 Gbps is toegenomen.
Een x16-connector haalt hiermee een snelheid van ongeveer 16 GBps. Vooral in de wereld van storage en netwerk adapters zal dit met spanning tegemoet gezien worden.
Daarnaast is er een verbeterde stroomvoorziening. Kaarten kunnen meer stroom van de bus trekken. Of dit voldoende zal zijn voor de moderne stroomvretende grafische kaarten is vooralsnog onduidelijk.

Nu Office 2007 uit is, de zakelijke versie dan toch, nog maar eens aandacht voor de compatibiliteit tussen de nieuwe Office programma's en hun voorgaande versies.
Office 2007 gebruikt XML om bestanden op te slaan en daarmee is de compatibiliteit tussen de nieuwe en oude Office programmatuur ver te zoeken.
Uiteraard kan Office 2007 uitstekend overweg met de oude bestandsformaten maar andersom leidt het tot problemen.
Hiervoor heeft Microsoft een compatibility pack uitgebracht. Deze zorgt ervoor dat Office XP en 2003 overweg kunnen met de bestandsformaten van Word, Excel en PowerPoint.
Voor mensen met Office 2000 en Windows 2000 zorgt het ervoor dat Windows de formaten kan converteren.

Overview
This update is required if the Offline Address Book (OAB) generation is moved from an Exchange 2007 server to an Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) server. It resolves issues which are caused due to changes in the OAB version 4 in Exchange 2007.
This update is also recommended if the OAB is generated on an Exchange Server 2003 SP2 server after Exchange 2007 is deployed in the Exchange organization.

Op het blog van het Exchange team is een calculator verschenen, inclusief uitleg uiteraard, waarmee je kunt berekenen hoeveel storage je nodig hebt op een Exchange 2007 mailbox server.
Het artikel verwijst eerst naar een aantal artikelen over sizing van o.a. je processoren en memory, de wijzigingen van IO sinds Exchange 64-bits is en....uiteraard storage requirements.
De calculator geeft geen uitsluitsel over het aantal benodigde schijven. Die keuze ligt meer aan het gekozen type opslagsysteem.

Er is al een tijdje geen update meer verschenen voor het IMF van Exchange 2003. Kennelijk waren ze bij Microsoft even met een korte vakantie. De updates verschijnen kennelijk weer vanaf de 17e januari.

Henrik Walther heeft het eerste deel van zijn artikel over de transitie van Exchange 2003 naar Exchange 2007 online gezet.
Bij een transitie moet je denken aan 3 fases: upgrade van Exchange naar versie 2007, het verhuizen van data vanaf legacy servers naar nieuwe 2007 servers en de decomissioning fase waarin alle oude servers worden uitgefaseerd.

Seagate zegt met de introductie van de nieuwe 2,5 inch Savvio 15K schijf 's werelds snelste harddisk te hebben. Het ding heeft een SAS-interface en is bedoeld voor gebruik in servers of opslagsystemen en dus niet voor consumenten. Seagate is er heilig van overtuigd dat het 2,5" formaat de nieuwe standaard zal worden.
De 10.000 rpm versie is leverbaar in 73 en 146 GB capaciteiten, de 15.000 rpm versie is nu leverbaar in 36 en 73 GB.
Er zijn nog geen onafhankelijke benchmarks opgedoken maar volgens Seagate is de nieuwe 15K rpm schijf zo'n 10% sneller met zijn access tijden en liggen de transferrates zo'n 40 % hoger.

Activewin heeft het bericht dat Windows Longhorn, de server versie van Vista, Windows Server 2007 zal gaan heten. De Microsoft official die het bevestigt is onbekend.
Als het inderdaad zo is zullen we binnenkort volop berichtgeving hierover op het web gaan zien. Naar verluidt is Microsoft ook al begonnen aan het MCSE-traject voor het nieuwe OS.

Overview
Starting in the spring of 2007, Daylight Saving Time (DST) start and end dates for the United States will transition to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005. DST dates in the United States will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November).
This update includes the changes for the United States DST change for the components affected in Microsoft Exchange. It also includes changes for the time zones in Canada (except Newfoundland) which will make the same change to their DST transition dates from 2007.
Additionally this update includes changes to time zone behavior and DST settings that have taken place since Exchange Server 2003 was originally released. These changes were previously released as individual updates and documented in articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Nortel en Microsoft hadden het al aangekondigd maar ze brengen nu gezamenlijk 3 geintergreerde computer en telefonie produkten uit.
De produkten zijn gebaseerd op de Live Communicator software, zowel de client als de server en de Nortel Communications Server voor telefonie.

Volgens Gartner krijgt Microsoft, door Windows Storage Server, steeds meer marktaandeel in de markt voor NAS en Unified Storage. Vooral het midden- en kleinbedrijf gebruikt het veel maar het lukt Microsoft meer en meer om toegang te krijgen tot de Enterprise markt.

The update itself doesn't require an update but system admins might be in for a surprise at the first reboot after January 12th.
Why?:
On that date Microsoft pushed a critical patch KB929969. The patch did not require a reboot, so your system will work fine for days, weeks or even months, but once you reboot…well lets just get into the symptoms:
Your first clue is that your Manage My Server screen will not work and you will get a Script Error complaining about the mys.dll/mys.hta.
Any attempt to open Computer Management, Enterprise Management, DeviceManagement…etc… will result in an error saying that mmc cannot find the *.msc file.
IIS and SQL server will fail. Any time you hit Cntl F or Search, it will fail.
So what did this patch do to your server? It removed a file. C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll was replaced by msxml4.dll, but this file doesn’t replace the msxml3.dll file effectively.
So what can we do to resolve the problem?:
Resolution:
Break out your Install CD and extract the following two files:
\i386\msxml3.dl_
\i386\msxml3r.dl_
from a DOS prompt you will need to expand these files and install them
in the system32 directory
c:> expand -r msxml3.dl_ c:\Windows\system32
c:> expand -r msxml3r.dl_ c:\Windows\system32
Then you need to register the msxml3.dll file
c:> regsvr32 c:\Windows\system32\msxml3.dll
Reboot the system and your server should be fine.
It seems like this Update from Microsoft has caused System admins all around the world nothing bug problems. But until this update is less buggy it looks as though a lot of servers will remain MS07-004 unpatched.

Microsoft has updated their knowledge base article on the US 2007 DST changes. The article goes into great detail. Why MS has updated the article is unclear to me.

Additionally, countries may change their policy of recognizing daylight saving time, or they may change the local time offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). What the PFDAVAdmin tool is and what it can do for you.
Every once in a while, a tool comes along that really must form a permanent part of the Exchange professional’s toolkit. One such tool is PFDAVAdmin. Although PFDAVAdmin has been around for a while now, there may be a few people out there who have yet to come across it or maybe need reminding of its existence. PFDAVAdmin is short for the Public Folder Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV)-based Administration tool and is written by Bill Long of Microsoft. Back in November 2005, PFDAVAdmin version 2.4 was finally made a supported tool and is now downloadable from the Microsoft downloads website.
