Het nieuws is er een beetje tussendoor geslopen maar is toch wel groot: Exchange 2007 is UIT. Vorige week heeft Microsoft de definitieve versie naar de fabriek gestuurd, de zogenaamde Release To Manufacturing status is bereikt. Waarschijnlijk is de definiteve versie vandaag op de websites bij Microsoft te downloaden (voor die mensen die daar toegang toe hebben uiteraard).
De belangrijkste vernieuwingen zijn, zoals altijd, onderhuids maar ook aan de buitenkant zal er voldoende zichtbaar zijn.
Even een opsomming:
- Exchange 2007 is volledig 64-bits en heeft een 64-bits OS nodig.
- OWA heeft een heel nieuw 'smoelwerk' gekregen.
- De beheertools zijn volledig herzien, ook is er een nieuwe scripttaal toegevoegd voor beheer namelijk PowerShell.
- Nieuwe serverrollen waaronder Transport Server (zowel Edge als Core).
- Nieuwe security pakketten van Microsoft voor Exchange (Forefront Security).
- Uitgebreidere ondersteuning van mobiele apparaten.

Microsoft is bijna klaar met haar 2e service pack voor haar mainstream Windows Server Operating System, Windows Server 2003. Het service pack is qua functionaliteit nu bevroren.

Microsoft is begonnen met een eerste beta van Office Communications Server 2007, een prive beta welteverstaan. Zo'n 2500 bedrijven kijken er nu naar.

Hij is een ontwikkelaar bij Microsoft en hij vertelt hoe je middels wat programmeerwerk de kalender van OWA 2007 een stuk handiger kunt maken. De produkt manager van Microsoft voor System Center, Calvin Keaton, heeft deze maand een zogenaamd TechNet Viewpoint artikel geschreven.
Zijn artikel gaat over de convergentie van backups, archivering en disaster recovery. Alle drie zeer belangrijke zaken die ieder voor zich al volop aandacht verdienen maar gezamenlijk misschien nog wel meer.
Hij start zijn betoog met een stukje over verzekering, een noodzakelijk iets waar we meestal niet vrolijk van worden als we de rekening ervan moeten betalen.....totdat de verzekering een keer nodig is. Zo is het ook met backups. Backups zijn echter de afgelopen 20 jaar nauwelijks veranderd en zijn dus onderhevig aan met name mechanische risico's. Tapes kunnen stuk, drives gaan stuk, robotarmen gaan stuk, etc.
Backup-to-disc systemen zoals Microsoft's System Center Data Protection Server zijn vernieuwingen op dit vlak.
Uiteraard gaat het Calvin vooral om Microsoft's eigen produkt maar er zijn uiteraard meerdere systemen op de markt. Dit maakt het stuk uiteraard niet minder interessant.
Het grote voordeel van dergelijke systemen is vooral gelegen in de convergentie die het biedt van zowel backups, archivering als disaster recovery.

On the WSUS team blog there is a nice explanation of all DST time zone changes and Microsoft's updates for them. Currently the patches for all systems are categorised as optional but as soon as all Outlook and Exchange tools are finished the two updates that were issued yesterday will be reclassified as critical.

The Exchange Server 2007 Management Pack includes rules and scripts to monitor and report on performance, availability, and reliability of all Exchange 2007 server roles including Mailbox, Client Access, Hub Transport, Edge Transport and Unified Messaging. This new Exchange Management Pack no longer requires the Management Pack Configuration Wizard. Nearly all configuration is automatic and the few manual steps required are covered in the included Readme file.

I've just come across an awesome little tool called VMDK2VHD. VMDK2VHD converts VMware virtual hard disks (VMDK) into Microsoft VHDs. The download contains 3 files total 112K - you just run the VMDK2VHD.EXE ...nice!
Anyway I've run through a conversion and it worked a treat. I used the 'Dugie-thumb-in-the-air' guide below:
- 'Scrub' the VMware Image using the first half of that very fine guide from Chris Wolf over at SearchServerVirtualization.com
- Use VMDK2VHD to convert the VMDK virtual disk to to a VHD
- Create a new VMC with roughly the same hardware (IDE drives, etc, etc) in Virtual PC 2007
- Attach your newly created and converted VHD
- Power up you new VMC, login and wait (a few minutes) for *all* the new hardware to be detected
- I clicked cancel to the new hardware driver wizard
- I also clicked no to the reboot - hey livin on the edge here
- Install the Virtual Machine additions (v13.724)
- Reboot
- Let the hardware wizard run
- Tada!
The VMDK was 1,986 Mb and it converted to a 2,001 Mb VHD in about 15 minutes on my aging T41p laptop.
Overall with VM reboots, coffee, etc, etc the whole conversion took about 40 minutes.
