De lanceerdatum van zowel Windows Vista, Exchange 2007 als Office 2007 lijkt bekend. De datum die genoemd wordt is 5 december maar de business versie van Vista zal al in november uitkomen.

Er doen zich 3 situaties voor waarin de patch niet wil installeren. De eerste is de afwezigheid van Windows Installer 3.1, dat is eenvoudig te herstellen.
De 2 andere situaties zijn ondertussen al gedocumenteerd in de knowledge base en voorzien van workarounds.

Op een blog heeft ene Patrick zijn bevindingen over diverse maxima van Active Directory eens openbaar gemaakt. Grappige info:
maximum number of GPOs that can apply to a user/computer: 999
maximum number of DNS servers in an AD-integrated zone (without manually adding the details): 850 (Windows 2000), 1300 (Windows 2003)
maximum number of supported DCs in a given domain: 1200
maximum number of members of a group: 5000 (Windows 2000), unlimited in Windows 2003
maximum number of DHCP servers in a forest: 850 (Windows 2000 SP1 or RTM), unlimited (Windows 2000 SP2 or later and Windows 2003)
maximum number of UPN suffixes that can be set through the UI: 850 (you can set more if you need to via ADSI scripts)
maximum number of objects that can be created over the lifetime of a given DIT (i.e. the AD database on a given DC): 2 billion

Jeff Jones heeft op zijn blog op technet een analyse geplaatst van van de gemelde vulnerabilities over de laatste 6 jaar.
Opvallend is dat het aantal meldingen de laatste jaren toeneemt. Het aantal meldingen met een High severity rating neemt ook toe. Procentueel echter loopt het aantal meldingen met een High severity licht af.

Microsoft heeft een niet publieke hotfix voor systemen waar het scannen voor updates over langere tijd zo'n 100% CPU blijkt te vragen.
Dit schijnt soms op systemen voor te komen, de patch is dan ook bedoeld voor die systemen waar dit probleem lijkt op te treden.
SYMPTOMS
When you run Microsoft Windows Update to scan for updates or to apply updates to any applications that use Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 3.1 together with Windows Update, CPU utilization may reach 100 percent for prolonged periods. CAUSE
This problem may occur when you have Microsoft Office installed and the Windows Update Agent tries to scan for Windows Installer updates.
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Microsoft heeft gisteren een update uitgebracht voor een probleem dat zich soms blijkt voor te doen na het installeren van MS06-051.
Het probleem blijkt zich voor te doen op zowel Windows 2000, XP en 2003. Het heeft te maken met applicaties die geen grotere stacks toestaan dan 2048 bytes. het vervelende is dat gebruikers hier geen foutmeldingen over krijgen.
Op dit moment is er al wel een lijst van applicaties bekend die last hebben van dit probleem maar de lijst is beperkt.
SYMPTOMS

Microsoft heeft de definitieve versie van Internet Explorer 7 uitgebracht. Het is nog niet echt op de website te zienmaar er zijn al wel links.
Het versienummer is geworden 7.0.5730.11.

De wonderen zijn de wereld nog niet uit maar Microsoft werkt samen met IBM op het gebied van e-mail archiving. Ze gaan samen IBM DS4200 Express opslagsystemen verkopen die voorgeinstalleerd de System Storage Acrhive Manager software van IBM hebben. Het systeem, bedoeld voor middelgrote en grote bedrijven, kan e-mail voor langere tijd archiveren. Er kan een 4 TB en een 8 TB versie gekocht worden en uiteraard kan een dergelijk systeem nog verder uitgebreid worden.
De samenwerking van Microsoft en IBM is redelijk uniek maar lijkt in de toekomst nog uitgebreid te worden. IBM wilde daar echter nog niet op vooruitlopen.

Microsoft heeft MS06-061 opnieuw uitgebracht. Het enige dat er veranderd is blijkt de patch voor Windows 2000 SP4 te zijn.
