Some issues with update MS06-015 have been reported worldwide. I have yet to hear of an issue within LogicaCMG NL or BE.
Below is a list of reported issues and some links to Microsoft information on them:
- Some HP applications are not interacting correctly with the system. These applications seem to be consumer applications. In Microsoft KB-article 918165 is documented which HP applications are causing the problem(s) [Share-to-web application, HP scanners, some HP CD-RW drives, HP printers with built-in card readers and HP cameras]. The problem is caused by the new version of VERCLSID.EXE which is installed by the patch. This executable might stop responding because of the installed HP software.
- This same problem with the VERCLSID.EXE can be caused by the Kerio persoanl firewall that might flag the executable as changed. The user must first allow this executable to be run.
- The latest version of HP's Image Zone version 5 is not affected. Updating to the latest versions of the HP software is certainly worth trying. http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006/04/18/425473.aspx
- Some older versions of nVidia graphics drivers might also cause the problem. It remains unclear to me why. Updating to the latest driver might certainly be tried. http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006/04/18/425473.aspx
- Microsoft has updated the MS06-015 bulletin, because of an addition to the caveats section http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx. This point directly to the previously mentioned Knowledge Base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165/en-us. Please read this article well as all symptoms are clearly documented [unable to access special folders such as "My documents", typing an address in IE address bar has no effect, Office applications may stop responding when files are opened or saved, etcetera].

McAfee heeft een onderzoek openbaar gemaakt over de toegenomen dreiging van rootkits sinds het jaar 2000. De complexiteit is over de jaren heen gestegen met zo'n 400% en over het laatste jaar (dus Q1 2005 tot Q1 2006) met zo'n 900%. De dreiging van stealth technologie op Linux is enorm afgenomen terwijl het op het Windows platform dramatisch (zo'n 2300%) is gestegen.
Opvallend is dat schrijvers van malware het Windows platform zo enorm interessant vinden. McAfee verklaart dat door enerzijds de grote aantallen Windows installaties en anderzijds de uitdaging in de ongedocumenteerde API's. Overigens geeft McAfee de open source gemeenschap en de diverse websites en blogs grotendeels de schuld van de enorme verspreiding van de laatste tijd.
Het artikel gaat daarna dieper in op de geschiedenis en achtergrond van rootkits en andere vormen van stealth technologie.

Op Windows 2000 systemen komt het volgende probleem nogal eens voor:
De SYSTEM registry hive wordt te groot waardoor het systeem niet meer wil opstarten.
Dat deze hive te goot raakt wordt heel vaak veroorzaakt door het veelvuldig mounten en unmounten van volumes.
Veritas heeft hier een tool voor. Dit tool, VxScrub, verwijdert overbodige verwijzingen in de registry en verkleint de hive.
Veritas raadt aan om dit tool gescheduled te laten lopen op servers om problemen te voorkomen.

Microsoft will re-release the MS06-015 update on April 25th.
What is changed? The binaries will not change, only additions for certain software that has difficulties with the current version of the update.
As reported before this has to do with some HP software and older nVidia graphics drivers.
This update will be available through all regular Microsoft update channels such as WindowsUpdate, Microsoft Update, SUS and WSUS.
People who have the current version installed and are not experiencing any troubles do not need the revised update.
