VMware heft laten weten dat haar beheertool voor VMware ESX omgevingen, Virtual Center, in de volgende versie ook zal draaien op Linux en OS X. De applicatie met de nieuwe naam VCenter zal als virtuele appliance op Linux kunnen draaien.

Een ander ding dat bekend werd is dat de capaciteit van de hypervisor volgend jaar flink zal worden opgekrikt.

Cisco heft de maker van instant messaging software Jabber overgenomen. Dit product is bijzonder open en sluit daarom zelfs aan op gesloten standaarden zoals Yahoo of MSN. Met deze overname begeeft Cisco zich opnieuw meer en meer op Microsoft’s terrein.

Ryan Narane wijst ons erop dat VMware een paar dagen terug Critical patches heeft uitgebracht voor ESXi en ESX 3.5.

Dit artikel geeft Forrester Research’s beeld op Cloud Computing. Zowel VMware als Citrix presenteren zich als een leverancier van cloud computing producten. Met hun producten kunnen Service Providers een Cloud Provider worden.

 

Beide softwaremakers hebben allerlei tooling die zorgdragen voor automatische VM deployment, SLA management en verplaatsingen. Bij Citrix heet dat Citrix Cloud Center, kortweg C3. Bij VMware spreekt men van vCloud.

Uiteraard is de aanpak van VMware anders, zij richten zich met name op de grote bedrijven die nu al veel ESX in gebruik hebben en dat intern eerst tot clouds willen ombouwen.

Op de site van Microsoft SysInternals is sinds kort een nieuw tool te vinden dat info verschaft over processoren. Denk hierbij aan fysieke processor, cores, memory architectuur, etcetera.

 

Introduction

Coreinfo is a command-line utility that shows you the mapping between logical processors and the physical processor, NUMA node, and socket on which they reside, as well as the cache’s assigned to each logical processor. It uses the Windows’ GetLogicalProcessorInformation function to obtain this information and prints it to the screen, representing a mapping to a logical processor with an asterisk e.g. ‘*’. Coreinfo is useful for gaining insight into the processor and cache topology of your system.

Cisco heeft een 12-tal security bulletins uitgebracht waarmee zo’n 24 lekken in IOS gefixt worden.

Iedereen die Cisco apparatuur beheert wordt aangeraden om de bulletins door te nemen en te controleren of er fixes bij zijn die van toepassing zijn. De allerbelangrijkste Patch geldt voor de Cisco uBR10012, deze scoort een 10 op de CVSS schaal.

Security onderzoekers hebben per ongeluk een PDF exploit pack ontdekt. Hiermee kunnen aanvallers redelijk eenvoudig hacks maken die gebruik maken van de diverse lekken in Adobe’s reader. Er zijn nog miljoenen versie van de Adobe Reader in omloop die hier dus kwetsbaar voor zijn. Het is dus absoluut zaak de oude kwetsbare versie te upgraden.

NetApp gaat een kaart leveren voor haar storage systemen waarmee al de aangekoppelde storage versneld wordt. Deze kaart, genaamd PAM (Performance Acceleration Module), wordt uitgerust met SSD storage en kan een winst van 30 a 40 % opleveren volgens NetApp UK.

NetApp’s insteek is om de caching te verbeteren t.o.v. alle harde schijven naar SSD te brengen. Het zou nog wel eens een maand of 12 kunnen gaan duren voordat NetApp het kan leveren.

Administrative templates provide Group Policy setting information for the items that appear under Administrative Templates. Group Policy tools use Administrative template files to populate policy settings in the user interface. This allows administrators to manage registry-based policy settings.

Administrative template files in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista are divided into ADMX (language-neutral) and ADML (language-specific) files. ADML files are XML-based ADM language files that are stored in a language-specific folder. By default, the %Systemroot%\PolicyDefinitions folder on a local computer stores all ADMX files, and ADML files for all languages that are enabled on the computer.

Er is een nieuw soort lek ontdekt in eigenlijk alle belangrijke webbrowsers en Adobe’s Flash. Het lek is zeer ernstig, zo ernstig dat de onderzoekers kleine stukjes van het probleem al openbaar hebben gemaakt. De getroffen softwaremakers hadden er juist om gevraagd nog niets openbaar te maken totdat de fixes klaar zouden zijn.

 

Het probleem schijnt te maken te hebben met de wijze waarop browsers werken, waarop links aangeklikt worden. Als je een kwaadaardige pagina bezoekt kan de aanvaller ervoor zorgen dat je op een willekeurige link, button of wat dan ook klikt zonder dat je dat in de gaten hebt !?!

Javascript o.i.d. heeft er niets mee te maken. Javascript uitschakelen helpt dan ook niet.

 

Zoals gezegd zijn alle belangrijke browsers kwetsbaar, inclusief Firefox 3 en  IE8. Zowel Mozilla als Microsoft geven toe dat het probleem bestaat maar dat er geen simpele oplossing voor bestaat.

Tijdens een Storage Decisions conferentie in New York bleek dat velen de-duplicatie op hun storage overwegen. Het aantal actieve gebruikers is nog niet zo heel hoog maar ze zijn wel laaiend enthousiast. De ratio’s die ze halen spreken voor zich, 30-op-1 is heel normaal en 70-op-1 komt ook voor. De verwachting is dat als meer bedrijven de-duplicatie in de gaten krijgen het weldra de normaalste zaak van de wereld wordt.

Een conclusie kun je al wel trekken: de-duplicatie is dé enabler voor backup-to-disc.

Onderzoekers van beveiligingsbedrijf Outpost24 hebben een beveiligingsprobleem in het TCP IP-protocol ontdekt waarmee aanvallers met enkele datapakketjes computers en servers kunnen platleggen. Het probleem is vergelijkbaar met een denial of service aanval, waarbij een systeem wordt overspoeld met dataverkeer. Bij dit probleem is echter slechts een beperkte hoeveelheid verkeer nodig.

Het lijkt erop alsof HP eindelijk het licht heft gezien op het vlak van iSCSI. Haar eigen producten op dit gebied kunnen als ‘beperkt inzetbaar’ of ‘te duur’ worden gekwalificeerd.

Nu heeft HP iSCSI aanbieder LeftHand overgenomen voor $ 360 miljoen. LeftHand is een aanbieder die al heel lang aan de weg timmert en met de overname krijgt HP natuurlijk een heel ander product in handen.

 

HP lijkt met deze overname een vergelijkbare stap gezet te hebben als Dell eerder deed met de overname van EqualLogic (zij betaalden daar wel een beetje meer voor).

Analisten vinden het tot nu toe een prima idee. Het gaat nog een tijd duren voordat FCoE een serieus product wordt. Veel bedrijven kunnen daar niet op wachten, die hebben nu een IP-storage oplossing nodig en dat kan met iSCSI. Het is zelfs maar de vraag in hoeverre FCoE ooit echt een concurrent wordt voor iSCSI.

Recentelijk heeft Microsoft een Server Virtualization Validation Program gestart. De reden is natuurlijk duidelijk, Microsoft ondersteunt nu formeel server virtualisatie omdat ze daar nu zelf eindelijk een behoorlijk product voor hebben. Het validatie programma voorziet echter ook in ondersteuning van andere hypervisors dan die van Microsoft, zoals VMware ESX.

 

Het is dan natuurlijk logisch dat mensen zich afvragen of dit ondersteuning brengt voor allerlei producten. Alleen een genuanceerd antwoord is hier op zijn plaats: voor sommige versies wel. Het heeft er alle schijn van dat alleen de nieuwste producten op de laatste service pack levels op ESX 3.5 update 2 (ook de laatste versie) worden ondersteund. Wil je het zeker weten, doe wat onderzoek.

Voor SharePoint houdt het in dat alleen MOSS 2007 SP1 met SQL Server 2008 op ESX 3.5 u2 ondersteund worden. Het e.e.a. valt terug te lezen op:

Daarnaast moet altijd de performance in de gaten gehouden worden. Microsoft heeft voor SQL 2008 Server een document met aanbevelingen geschreven. Voor platforms als ESX gelden natuurlijk dezelfde aanbevelingen vertaald naar het platform (en dat zal Microsoft niet voor ons doen).

Er was al sprake van maar nu is het zover, Microsoft heeft Hyper-V als separaat product uitgebracht en gratis op de downloadsite gezet.

Het product heeft wel wat beperkingen t.o.v. het broertje dat in Server 2008 ingebakken zit.

Het maximum aantal processoren is beperkt tot 4 en het memory tot 32 GB. Clustering en live migration zijn ook niet mogelijk, hiervoor moet je toch echt Windows Server 2008 installeren.

De Internet Engineering TaskForce is hard bezig om IPv4 en IPv6 beter met elkaar te laten communiceren. Dit zou het makkelijker moeten kunnen maken voor de wereld om niet massaal om te hoeven schakelen van IPv4 op IPv6.
